Opportunity in 2015-2017 to access fully-funded revegetation to improve less-productive land and help establish new habitat areas for Malleefowl and Mallee Emu-wren around Billiatt Conservation Park.

From 2015 to 2017 the Murray Mallee Local Action Planning Association and Greening Australia will be running a project with interested landholders to undertake revegetation along with broad-scale fox, rabbit and weed control in the areas surrounding Billiatt Conservation Park.

Whilst the recent Billiatt fire was a near disaster for local residents and farmers, it was also a blow to the long-term survival of many native animals including the Malleefowl and Mallee Emu-wren. The scale of this fire highlights the importance of having suitable areas for these species outside of the Park.

Past vegetation clearance has removed most of the Malleefowl’s preferred habitat in the district and this iconic species is thought to be just hanging on due to fox baiting efforts and the remaining vegetation which is often less than ideal for its needs. Revegetation of open mallee blocks on suitable soil will provide a future resource for the Malleefowl and aims to reduce its dependence on the Park.

The Mallee Emu-wren is barely surviving in the district but there are good populations in Victoria in Murray-Sunset NP. Restoring and revegetating spinifex mallee on light sandy country between Billiatt and Murray-Sunset is an important first step to ensure the survival of the Mallee Emu-wren in South Australia.

Revegetation of locally native mallee vegetation has many additional benefits including:

  • Stabilisation of light sandy country

  • Wind shelter for stock

  • Ability to register and sell carbon credits

  • Potential for broombush and/or sandalwood sustainable harvest

  • Good use of under-utilised or unprofitable parts of the property.

In 2015, 2016 and 2017, interested landholders in the district are encouraged to participate in the project which will provide fully-funded revegetation services, planned and implemented in partnership with the landholder.
