It is rare that a motion sensing camera will photograph a Malleefowl hatching, let alone capture a video of this special occurrence. As part of our monitoring program for the Sunset to Billiatt Linkage Project we were lucky enough to capture footage of a Malleefowl chick as it made its way up to the top of the mound to take its first breath. Its amazing to think this little chick has hatched deep within the mound and made its own way up through the heavy sand and leaf litter to the top of the mound. Once out in the air, it takes off into the bush and fends for itself - no chirping for mum or dad to bring food back to the nest for this little bird.
