Woodlot project at Glenholme

 

 

This project was initiated and set up by Ian Filmer and Craig Neumann as a project of the Murraylands Agroforestry Working Group.

 

The Working Group was initially supported by the Murraylands Regional Development Board - it is now supported by the Chaffey Learning Experience (CLX). Assistance has been received from the Coorong LAP.

 

The site is one of 8 across the Murray Mallee and Coorong LAP areas. The species planted at each site were selected from DEWNR’s old FloraSearch plantings at Monarto. In 2002 a project called FloraSearch was initiated to provide a focus to the development of broad scale woody crops in short-cycle agroforestry systems for the wheat-sheep zone of southern Australia. FloraSearch endeavoured to select and develop woody perennial species suited to the concept of developing commercially viable industries, which could also meet farming and natural resource management goals. The possibility of economic return encouraging landholders to plant deep rooted perennials in unproductive places they might otherwise not revegetate.

 

Genetic improvement and crop development research of selected species was then conducted at a number of trial sites across Southern Australia with the best selections planted in provenance trials at Monarto in 2006.

 

It was acknowledged at the time that ongoing support would be required if the selected plant species were to progress towards domestication and further development. Unfortunately no further funding was gained after mid 2014.

 

In the second half of 2013, with the Monarto site’s future under a cloud and the gathered genetic resources future uncertain, the volunteers of the Agroforestry Working Group decided to collect seed from the best performing provenances of the most promising species and proceeded to produce enough seedlings to plant eight demonstration sites in July 2014. Planting at Glenholme was conducted over 5 days in June 2014. Site preparation included v-blading and some deep ripping. The site consists of 10 plots with a total of 120 plants in each plot. Rows are orientated North/South and plants are spaced at 1.5 metres with 3m between rows

Results

Both 2013 and 2014 were quite dry and the first year planting was carried out a little later than desirable. A higher mortality rate occurred in the rows closest to the existing tree line and it is thought this was a result of moisture competition from the mature vegetation in the dry conditions.
